‘Joe the Plumber’ May Run for Congress: ‘Maybe We Need Some Regular Guys in There.’
Please tell me he’s kidding. Lie to me if you have to.
I understand the desire to have “regular guys” in Congress. But not this regular guy. Why? He was the guy who was “about to buy” a plumbing business and was worried that Obama’s plan would tax him more. He became a Conservative icon and the darling of the McCain-Palin campaign. He was also:
- Not a licensed plumber or registered to operate as one (worked under his employer’s license)
- Not in a financial position to buy a business that wasn’t for sale
Hmm. Sounds like a fraud. More importantly, all of his questions were based on a hypothetical situation. His dream.
This makes him the perfect example of why I believe so many on the Right believe the wealthiest shouldn’t be taxed more. And why they vote against their own interests, financially. People like Joe the Plumber do not believe they are part of the working or middle class. They are about to be rich or will be rich. So, they will vote the way those who they emulate would vote. Instead of voting based on their reality now, they are voting based on their desired future reality.
This isn’t to begrudge their dreams and aspirations. More power. They just don’t have to throw others under the bus…those of us who accept and are working with our present realities.
