Can You Unite if You’re So Far Right?

Bachmann Says She can be “Unifying” U.S. Candidate

No, that wasn’t a typo. This really made me do a double take. Her reasoning? She used to be a Democrat. She believes this is what makes her understand Independents.

She went from being a Democrat to someone who is far right compared to other members of the GOP. Honestly, how would you understand an Independent when you skated right past them to almost the end of the opposite spectrum? You didn’t even stay and chat for a while.

Let’s take an example of an Independent voter – the Fiscally Conservative, Socially Liberal. Being in CA, I’ve run into a lot of these kind of Independents. Someone like this would find her voting record with taxes and spending attractive. No on TARP, No on Stimulus, No on Tax Hikes for Capital Gains, No VAT. On issues like abortion and gay rights, this is where she might turn the Independent voter off. She is not just anti abortion, she doesn’t make the exception for rape, incest, or the life of the mother. She voted no on prohibiting discrimination against sexual orientation and supports the Defense of Marriage Act.

That type of voter would love lower taxes on the gains from their investments. Would they be willing to vote for the candidate that agrees but wants to see abortion illegal even if the mother was dying? I don’t think so.

If you want to lasso in Independents, it would be a lot easier to do when you’re closer to the herd than at the opposite end of the ranch.

Sometimes, the Base Drives Me Crazy

I’m an unapologetic Liberal. But I’m not 100% Liberal. And I’m unapologetic about that too. I did make the mistake of sharing one of my non-liberal views on The Daily Kos, the Liberal Mecca.

I don’t believe in tax-payer funded abortion unless the woman’s life is in danger or she is a victim of rape or incest. Because it is elective, she should pay for it.

I know. Would I rather pay for an abortion now or years of welfare? I have issues with welfare, but I won’t go into that now. It’s not an issue of short-term vs. long-term cost. It’s about responsibility. They had sex, and it was an unplanned pregnancy. Sad, but it happens. If she wants an abortion, fine. It’s her choice. I don’t want my tax dollars to pay for her mistake.

I know. She’s poor and can’t afford one. And? There is a charity that helps women pay for their abortions. Fund Abortion Now

I know. Some lifestyle choices like smoking can lead to cancer. Should treatment be offered to them if they can’t afford it? Yes. I understand that this is a good point that I can’t refute. I still don’t believe that tax payers should fund elective abortions. I demonstrated that “feeling doesn’t equal rational thinking” according to one poster. I can accept that.

But so the f*ck what? It’s my opinion, and I’m entitled to it. Why do I have to justify it to the base? Why am I called a “troll” or “not a very good Liberal?” Just because a few of my opinions divert from the “normal” Liberal view? Do we all have to be the same?

Members of the Liberal base, you drive me crazy sometimes. I don’t give a flying Fig Newton if you hate having to share the Big Tent with me. Sharing it with those who can’t accept that not everyone is like them isn’t roses and cupcakes either. I’m here, you’re here, and we’re Liberals. There are things we will agree with and others that we won’t. Deal with it. You can tell me (as you did), “Go f*ck yourself, neighbor!” And I can tell you (as I did), “Right backatcha, neighbor!” Or you can call me a Right-Wing Troll. Yeah, that one stung a little.

In the end, the stuff we do agree on will make me look past our neighborly squabble. Will you?

Abortion Theater Continues: Medicaid

How long is this run? If you miss a showing, can you get a refund?

Here is the latest show that I found on Crooks and Liars: Thanks To Federal Budget Deal, D.C. Abortion Fund Scrambles To Raise Money For Scheduled Abortions

This is where my stance deviates from my Pro-Choice sisters and brothers.

I don’t believe that abortion should be covered by state funds, except in the cases of rape and incest, if the mother’s life is in danger, or if it is found that the baby won’t survive after it’s born.

The Hyde Amendment outlawed federal funding for abortion. There are states whose Medicaid programs do cover them for whatever reason. Others only will do so in the cases of rape and incest and when the woman’s life is in danger.

Because it is an elective procedure, I believe the patient should have to pay for it. I’ve heard the argument that because it’s a legal medical procedure, it should be covered by the state. I don’t believe so because of that “elective” part. However, in the cases above, you shouldn’t have to be subjected to carrying the spawn of your rapist, die, or carry a baby to term if it’s going to die. That’s just cruel. These are exceptions where I think Medicaid should pay for it.

I’ve also heard the argument that because the woman is on Medicaid, it’s a given that she’s poor and can’t afford it. Still, since she got pregnant, she and/or the guy who got her pregnant should be the ones to pay. Plus, there are organizations out there that will help low-income women get abortions. Like these:

National Network of Abortion Funds

Third Wave Foundation

I stumbled on an argument for Medicaid funded abortion that shocked me. There are some who support it, but only if the woman gets her tubes tied. Um, you have an unplanned pregnancy, but in order to get an abortion, you can never get pregnant again? Sounds a little too much like Der Führer’s compulsory sterilization program.

In the story above, after D.C. stopped Medicaid-funded abortions this week, there were 28 abortions already scheduled. The organization, D.C. Abortion Fund sent out an emergency plea for donations. They were able to raise the money to cover them. The article didn’t state if they were successful or not.

Online Day of Action to Stop the War on Women: NARAL Pro-Choice America

Online Day of Action to Stop the War on Women: NARAL Pro-Choice America

Make your voice heard – join NARAL Pro-Choice America’s online day of action now!

There is a rally in Washington, D.C. going on today. It’s a huge day for choice. They’ve declared war on women. Time to gear up.

I’m with you ladies in spirit, and I added a little something for the cause. Keep fighting the good fight.

Toilets, and Lightbulbs, and the EPA, Oh My!

Toilets Join Light Bulbs on Sen. Rand Paul’s List of Necessities Burdened by ‘Busybody’ Rules

“The point is that most members of your administration probably would be frank and would be up front to characterize themselves as being pro-choice for abortion,” Paul said. “But you’re really anti-choice on every other consumer item that you’ve listed here.”

I had to wipe tea off my monitor. From the Aqua Buddha allegations to this soundbyte, I don’t think the guy is playing with a full deck.

Comparing the reproductive freedom of women with the freedom to buy whatever toilet or light bulb you want? When is the incandescent light bulb going to go on in his head? These two aren’t even in the same universe.

dcmartin couldn’t have described it better in her post:

Rand Paul Angry Because Energy Department Won’t Let Him Have a Fecal Abortion or Some Crazy Shit Like That

Here’s my proposition to Rand Paul. I’ll keep the ability to decide what happens to my body, and you can pick whatever light bulb turns you on. Deal?

Rachel Maddow: Anti-Choice Right Targets Doctors

This doctor shares what he goes through and faces by providing safe abortions. He was one of the doctors on the Wanted Posters that circulated in North Carolina last November. I figured this was fitting considering that today is Abortion Providers Appreciation Day. The doctor asked that his face be concealed and his voice altered. That’s why it sounds creepy.

Abortion Provider Appreciation Day

March 10 is Abortion Provider Appreciation Day. NARAL states, “Abortion Provider Appreciation Day was established on the anniversary of the murder of Dr. Gunn to honor the medical professionals who continue to face a campaign of violence, vandalism, and intimidation.”
Dr. Gunn’s murder led to the passage of the FACE Act (Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances). His death even inspired Marilyn Manson’s song, Get Your Gunn. He said “Gunn’s murder by ‘pro-life’ activists is ultimate hypocrisy.”

In light of the war on women legislation on the federal and state level, they should be appreciated. Doctors who provide abortions do so knowing the danger. If God forbid (yes, I went there) the pro-birth movement gets their way and abortion is again illegal, there is already a network of doctors who will go underground.

Thank you doctors for taking the risk to ensure safe abortions.

My Sonogram Can Beat up Your Sonogram

This sonogram illustrates how I feel about the pre-abortion requirement.

Texas’ Dueling Sonogram Bills Could Delay Law

Which sonogram bill will make it to the governor’s desk?

House Version:

  • 24-hour wait period
  • Would listen to a description of fetal development and heartbeat
  • May decline viewing the sonogram
  • but she won’t be told she has the option (of course)

Senate Version:

  • 2-hour wait period
  • May decline viewing the sonogram or listening to heartbeat
  • Would still have to listen to a description of fetal development
  • unless she is a rape or incest victim or there is serious fetal abnormality

I suppose the Senate version is the least insensitive. We’re still talking about a forced medical procedure. One of them is going to end up on the governor’s desk. I guess we can hope for the least crappy one?

An Abortion Rant from Angry-Land

I’m going to rant for a bit because I’m in a bad frickin’ mood, and all the crap I’ve been reading lately regarding abortion is pissing me off. BIG TIME. I think I click on Tag Surfer too much.

I mean it’s the same stuff, of course. I think it’s the authors. They’re men. I know I may piss off some of the guys that are kind enough to read my blog. Well, more than usual. At this point, though, I’m feeling too b*tchy to care.

Why do men who can never get pregnant want to have such a huge say in the lives of those who can? I know, you guys provide the sperm. Thank you. Do you throw up in the morning? Gain the weight? Go through all the hormonal changes? Endure labor and delivery? Nurse?

NO.

Women do. It’s so easy to sit on the sidelines, judge her, and tell her what to do with her body. It’s just as easy to want her to prove she actually miscarried or was raped raped. Or make her have a sonogram. Or make her carry the offspring of a rapist rapist. Or make her carry it even if she will DIE.

You know why it’s so easy? Because you are not the one who will be subjected to any of the above.

I know, you’re speaking for the one who has no voice. But are you even listening to the ones who already have voices?

I’m sorry, but there are times when I want to say, “Until you grow a uterus, kindly STFU.”

No Photo for You!

Even though the billboard was removed, this creeped me out. The mom of the girl in the picture did not authorize the use of her daughter’s image on the billboard. She signed a release form for a modeling agency. Looks like they sold the picture. Wow. Another reason to be super careful and know exactly what it is you’re signing.
