These hearings are a bad thing. First of all, they don’t appear to be all that effective on illuminating trends in the American Muslim community. There are some good scholars already doing that, but they aren’t anywhere near this. Second, the medium of this ‘inquiry’ is overtly prejudiced and will be a propaganda victory for those who argue that the US government is Islamophobic. Doubly so given King’s hypocritical support for the IRA – a terrorist group notorious for its own use of bombings against civilians, and far more effective than any of the American Muslim radicals have been so far.

Excellent point, dcmartin. The Westboro Baptists are a radical religious group – and one that has extremist views as well as being likely aligned with other more extreme groups. Yet their free speech rights are certainly intact.

With all the seccessionist groups popping up, how about we start some hearings on THAT? Wasn’t Palin’s husband part of a seccessionist group before she was tapped as McCain’s running mate? That’s kind of radical. Or how about having some hearings on radical religious nutjobs like Fred Phelps and family, and others like them? Muslims don’t have a lock on “scary radicalization”…………unless you have Lipton on your face.

I understand that definitely. The thing is, why did they bring up Muslims being uncooperative? I don’t think that’s productive at all.They could have brought in examples of when they were being cooperative – to emphasize and plead with the community to follow that example. But they didn’t. It was skewed in one direction, as Jackie Speier said.

Thanks for the explanation, Kendrick. I’m not being facetious. When I read the articles after the meetings and saw clips, I wondered why they held the hearings? If it’s to share stories, then they achieved their purpose. It irritated me when I heard King emphasize/downplay domestic terror (i.e., McVeigh, etc), by saying they were “isolated madmen.” What does he think that Somali teenager in Oregon was? Or the Fort Hood shooter? Or the Times Square guy? One person, who turned radical, and was about to/went nuts. And again, how are giving examples of uncooperative Muslims going to encourage them to be cooperative?

There are Muslim groups who welcome this dialogue. Myself, I’m not opposed to the dialogue taking place – because not bringing issues into the open just sustains myth, ignorance and prejudice. Americans need more understanding, not less, if we’re to co-exist with different cultures and religions. Years in Texas taught me that when you allow the media to demonize Mexican Americans and portray them as murderers only fostered hostility and fear. I just wish the chairperson was more appropriate to this dialogue and less hypocritical, considering his alliance with the Irish Republican Army.

Okay Kendrick. No one disputes that. But has Rep. King summoned anyone who has been injured by the extremists NOT of the Muslim faith? You might want to have him review the deadly actions of those who "look more like us".
