Keep Sticking it to the Schools

Wisconsin Governor to Outline Ultimate Intentions in Budget

Well, that was a ominous title. Just what are your ultimate intentions, Scotty? One of them, according to the article, is major cuts to schools. Big surprise.

Another interesting tidbit I read from the article.

Wisconsin’s average teacher salary of about $48,000 ranks in the top half of states nationally, though it remains significantly behind the $60,000 average salaries in the top-paying states of California and Connecticut, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures. Wisconsin students also rank in the top half nationally on standardized tests, scoring a full percentage point better on the ACT college entrance exam.

The teachers are doing something right, despite the naysayers.

I can’t wait for the release of his “outline” tomorrow, which will probably be one of the creepiest PowerPoint Presentations ever.

No Photo for You!

Even though the billboard was removed, this creeped me out. The mom of the girl in the picture did not authorize the use of her daughter’s image on the billboard. She signed a release form for a modeling agency. Looks like they sold the picture. Wow. Another reason to be super careful and know exactly what it is you’re signing.

I Give, You Give

Obama: Public Employees Should Not be Vilified

Football can be the great uniter. I love this picture even though it has absolutely nothing to do with the Wisconsin showdown.

I loved this: “You’re not going to convince the bravest Americans to put their lives on the line as police officers or firefighters if you don’t properly reward their bravery.”

And thanks for reminding the governors that both sides have “to give something up.” The union members in Wisconsin gave up the fight on the pension and healthcare contribution. That helps your budget, right? What are you willing to give up, Scotty?

Tea for Three?

The 2012 Election is a lot closer than we think. Will there be 3 to choose from – Democrat, Republican, and Tea Party? I thought the Tea Party latched itself on to the GOP.

Ron Paul, Herman Cain Win Tea Party Poll to Run Against Obama

Representative Ron Paul looks like the top contender from a poll taken at the Tea Party summit in AZ. He, Georgia radio host Herman Cain, and Governor Tim Pawlenty spoke. Interestingly, Sarah Palin came in third.

Now, Newt Gingrich also is throwing his hat in the ring according to GOP officials. AP Sources: Gingrich Closer to Presidential Run

“Two years ago today, Americans from all across the nation and from all walks of life began a movement on a national scale,” he wrote Sunday on his Facebook page. “Fed up with a Republican Party that forgot its reformer roots and a Democratic Party where every solution involved more government, tea party rallies began brewing in over 50 cities with an estimated 30,000 people attending.”

He’s sucking up to the Tea Party, but will he run on a GOP ticket? Are all these candidates fighting for the GOP nomination? Will there be three boxes on the general election ballot – Republican, Democrat, Tea?

It will be very interesting to see who will end up running against Obama. Who’s your pick?

SEIU-UHW Local 250

That (Service Employees International Union – United Healtcare Workers West, Local 250) was my daddy’s union before he retired. And the reason why I bristled when I saw this counter-protest sign. The misspelling of thuggery elicited an eye roll. Anyway, the sign was from a protest in Olympia, Washington, one of many places around the country that drew thousands in support of Wisconsin union workers.

Protesters across US Decry Wisconsin Anti-Union Efforts

I was listening to my local news talk radio station while waiting in the drive-thru line. My Saturday night ritual includes an In-N-Out Double-Double Burger and French Fries. The topic was the anti-Union protests. A caller went off on firefighters who get to go to a firehouse and watch TV, retiring early, and get 100% salary pensions. A couple callers ahead said, “It was just 10 years ago on 9/11, firefighters were the heroes. Now they’re entitled parasites?” I thought, “Exactly.”

Going to a firehouse to watch TV? When that alarm goes off, they put their lives on the line. They may be called to help with other states’ fires. Nevada firefighters went to fight the Southern California wildfires a few years ago. I remember hearing of firefighters on 24-hour shifts and sleeping on sidewalks. Some died. They deserve those benefits and more.

In Wisconsin, the firefighters are spared in the bill, but many are out there with the protesters. They realize that being spared wasn’t fair and that there is nothing guaranteeing their collective bargaining rights would not be on the chopping block later.

From New York to LA, people are showing their solidarity. I loved the messages on the signs:

  • United We Bargain, Divided We Beg
  • We are All Wisconsin
  • The Time to Stand Up for the American Worker Now
  • Save the American Dream
  • This is What Solidarity Looks Like

I don’t know what will happen in Wisconsin. This uprising hasn’t been an exercise in futility, though. Indiana GOP state lawmakers dropped the Right to Work bill. As Walker digs his heels in, so are the union workers. It’s a showdown. From the article: Bradley Whitford, who starred in television’s “The West Wing,” told his hometown crowd, “This governor has to understand Wisconsin is a stubborn constituency. We fish through ice!”

Good. Every ounce of stubbornness will be needed in this fight.

Wisconsin Protesters Get Pizza Donation

I wanted to see what this place looked like. I stumbled upon this AP video uploaded yesterday. 1200 pizzas per day. Dang!!

Freedom of Speech…Even If

Freedom of Speech…Even if we find the message repugnant. See this lovely billboard that was put up in SoHo in NYC? The Most Dangerous Place for an African American is in the Womb. The pro-choice gal in me yelled, “Tear that crap ass billboard down, NOW.” The die-hard supporter of the First Amendment in me yelled back, “Not so fast!”

I find this sign absolutely offensive. It’s an assault on a woman’s right to choose with a racial twist. So did they put it up just for Black History Month? Or was its timing just coincidentally insensitive?

Anyway, a lot of people share my view. So much so that their complaints caused Lamar Advertising to pull the ad. Part of me is happy, but a bigger part of me is not. Freedom of Speech doesn’t apply to just my causes.

My solution would have been to find billboard space as close to it as possible (preferably next to it) with a pro-choice message. Hopefully, we would be able to make it twice as big and add flashing neon lights.

Possible messages from creative signs I’ve seen:

  • IF YOU CUT OFF MY REPRODUCTIVE CHOICE…I’LL CUT OFF YOURS
  • LIFE BEGINS WHEN YOU STAND UP TO RELIGIOUS FASCISTS
  • HOS BEFORE EMBRYOS

This would make a fabulous sign.

If you see an anti-choice billboard, fight the urge to set it on fire, deface it, or call for its removal. They have every right to spread their message.

And so do we.

So give me a shout if you see one of them. I’ll start a fund for our sign. It will be twice as big and cause twice as much controversy. Believe it.

Democracy: All the Rage

Well, unless, it’s a “democracy” we help set up.

11 Killed as Iraqis Protest in ‘Day of Rage’

One of the protesters said, “We want a good life like human beings, not like animals.” You mean the life they have there is not even suitable for an animal? That is just so reassuring.

I’m so tired of these absolutely useless wars. Yeah, yeah. We’ve drawn down the troops. And the ones still there? The contingent forces? How long will they stay?

I shouldn’t have read this story because it reminds me again of our colossal mistake in invading Iraq. For WMDs that were never there in the first place. The gas we and other coutries gave them to kill the Kurds doesn’t count. And neither does the yellow cake. I have a box of Betty Crocker Butter cake mix at home. Since I haven’t mixed it, poured it into a Bundt pan and baked it, it’s not a cake. And it’s been there forever, who knows if it’s still good?

So here we are, years later, because we decided to chase after WMDs that didn’t exist. Sure Saddam and his sons, all evil incarnate, are dead. But at what cost? So many American soldiers and Iraqi citizens dead. Trillions of dollars flushed. And the lack of clean water and unreliable electricity? They do have blue ink-stained fingers and a corrupt government, though.

Mission Accomplished.

Pants Ablaze

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker Says He Wasn’t Trying to ‘Trick’ Democrats

So he wasn’t trying to trick them into coming back? I guess everyone else can see flames emanating from his pants but him.

*ahem* Scotty. You were on tape.

I would be willing to sit down and talk to him, the assembly Democrat leader, plus the other two Republican leaders—talk, not negotiate and listen to what they have to say if they will in turn—but I’ll only do it if all 14 of them will come back and sit down in the state assembly…legally, we believe, once they’ve gone into session, they don’t physically have to be there. If they’re actually in session for that day, and they take a recess, the 19 Senate Republicans could then go into action and they’d have quorum…so we’re double checking that. If you heard I was going to talk to them that’s the only reason why. We’d only do it if they came back to the capital with all 14 of them…

The prank phone call only proved what most of us already knew.

The latest news is that the state troopers went to the homes of the Wisconsin 14 since there have been “sightings” – returning to get clothes, etc. No luck. Stay on the IL side, Senators. Your family can get the clothes to you. Stay close, and maybe move around a bit to different locations within IL. Man, this is like a spy movie.

Anyway, Walker said that he’s not going to let one prank phone call to be a distraction…from his pants on fire?

Silly Governor, tricks are for kids and impeached Presidents.

Not a Gentleman, but a Scholar

Saudi Man Charged with Plotting Terrorist Attack

Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari was a Saudi national on scholarship to a college in Texas and had been plotting for years. OK, I don’t know how forthcoming the Saudi government is about the educational background of its students, but I would have vetted rigorously if I were on that scholarship committee. Not because he was Saudi. I believe it should be done across the board for any foreign national applying to study in the United States. Not just for scholarships, but for admission to the university. I would try to find as many essays written and obtain character references. I’d even administer psychological testing before they even have a shot at entrance.

I do not believe in denying education to foreign nationals. I still regret not studying abroad when I was in college and carefree. It can be a very enriching experience if they come here, or if some of our students choose to study abroad. We just have to be extremely selective of the students who will have the privilege.
